This December UAN partnered with Austin Disaster Relief Network to donate and distribute 40 much-needed space heaters before the upcoming cold front to displaced local flood victims currently living in thinly insulated RV's and mobile homes in Sandy Creek (Leander), Texas.
2025: Making the Holidays Brighter for Sandy Creek Flood Survivors
This December, UAN partnered with other local charities to offer holiday cheer and comfort by providing a free community dinner along with games, music, and more. Even Santa showed up for the kids! We raised funds to provide H.E.B. gift cards for so many of neighbors in Sandy Creek (Leander) still recovering from losing their homes, property, and sometimes even loved ones in the devastating July 4 flood.
2025: Preparing Care Packages for Sandy Creek Flood Victims
This September, UAN partnered with Austin Disaster Relief Network to prepare care packages filled with everyday essentials for our neighbors, the many needy families in Sandy Creek, Leander who lost their homes, properties, and even pets and loved ones in the catastrophic July 4 floods. A tragic school bus accident added insult to injury to this struggling community on the very first day of school, so these care packages were more welcome than ever.
2017: Support for Domestic Abuse Victims Displaced by Hurricane Harvey
UAN Charity Advisor Johanna Moya Fabregas celebrated her 40th birthday with a fundraising dinner and silent auction to benefit domestic abuse victims who were displaced from shelters by Hurricane Harvey! Over $4,000 was raised for this great cause. These funds allowed UAN to purchase necessities that were delivered to the Family Crisis Center in Bastrop, TX.
2018 to Present: Knitting Hearts Together, Helping the Unhoused
UAN's Knitting Group began monthly meetings in March of 2018, bringing together a group of dedicated adults and children who knit hats and scarves for Austin's unhoused community. In addition to receiving the soul-nurturing benefits of working to serve others, the group reaps the cognitive and physical benefits of using rhythmic, repetitive hand movements that focus the mind and lead to a relaxed state, similar to meditation.
Once beyond the initial learning curve, studies have shown that knitting can reduce heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol (the stress hormone), as well as provide a sense of creative fulfillment.
2017 Offering "East Meets West" Health Education Workshops
UAN's "East Meets West" health education workshops bring together experts to discuss Eastern and Western approaches to a variety of health and wellness related issues.
2017 to Present: International Cooking Class Events
UAN hosts fun, annual cooking class events to demonstrate how cultures from around the world prepare tasty and nutritious meals that support health, wellbeing, and a sense of community. Stimulating our taste buds as well as our souls, these educational and entertaining experiences leave attendees fulfilled in more ways than one.
Click here for more pictures from our first class, where we made Chinese dumplings. For our first virtual class in 2020 (watch here) we made Mongolian Hot Pots. Since then, we've held an Asian Tea Ceremony class, a Spring Roll class, special Italian and Indian dish classes...and more!
